Saint-poet Sri Sambanda Peruman had rendered this song giving a worshipping day picture of Gokarnam. This was sung in the 7th century. And, there is not much of difference between now and then.

In the first part of the poem, the multi-facets of Lord Siva is described — One who carries the innocent young consort Mother Uma on his left part of the body, one who climbs upon Nandi, one who consumed the poison that emanated from the sea, for the well-being of the Devas.
That Lord is seated at a holy placel where Female devotees along with the men bow at the feet of the Lord, by offering finest of the flowers, where the wasps/beetles make merry-making sound in the evenings, that glorified place is Sri Gokarnam

பேதைமட மங்கையொரு பங்கிட மிகுத்திடப மேறியமரர்
வாதைபட வண்கடலெ ழுந்தவிட முண்டசிவன் வாழுமிடமாம்
மாதரொடு மாடவர்கள் வந்தடி யிறைஞ்சிநிறை மாமலர்கடூய்க்
கோதைவரி வண்டிசைகொள் கீதமுரல் கின்றவளர் கோகரணமே

பேதைமைக் குணத்தையுடைய இளம்பெண்ணாகிய உமாதேவியை இடப்பாகமாகக் கொண்டு, இடப வாகனத்தின் மேலேறி, தேவர்கள் துன்பத்தில் அழுந்தியபோது கடலில் தோன்றிய விடத்தை உட்கொண்டு சிவபெருமான் காத்தருளினார். அப்பெருமான் வீற்றிருந்தருள்கின்ற இடமாவது பெண்களோடு ஆடவர்களும் வந்து இறைவனின் திருவடிகளை வணங்கி, சிறந்த மலர்களைத் தூவிப் போற்ற, சாத்திய மாலைகளில் வரி வண்டுகள் மொய்த்து இன்னிசை எழுப்பும் கீர்த்தி மிகுந்த திருக்கோகரணம் என்னும் திருத்தலமாகும்.
