Hanuman Maharaj — Mother Seetha Conversation

This is part of 4000-Divya Prabandham (Tamil devotional text sung by Azhwars)

Sri Rama Navami is approaching. We are in the midst of tough times. Let us pray to the holy trinity (Lord Rama, Divine Mother and Bajrangbali) to bring the much needed peace in our lives.

Hanuman Maharaj visits Mother Seetha at Ashokavanam, as Lord Rama’s Ambassador. Sri Periazhwar (father of Mother Andal) composed 10 poems delineating the 8 proofs that Hanuman Maharaj shared with Divine Mother to gain her acceptance, before handing over the ring (Periazhwar thirumozhi — 3.10)

In the typical interpretation tradition, each verse has got deep meaning that connects with the philosophy of Vishistha-dvaita/Ramanuja sampradaya, here we will restrict ourselves to the first layer.

  1. Lord Rama won you after breaking Siva-Dhanusu (bow). He also took the bow & Tapasya from Lord Parasuram and made him humble
  2. Mother bound Lord Ram with a ball of Jasmine flowers
  3. After obtaining the boon from King Dasaratha, Mother Kaikeyi had ordered Lord Rama to exile and go into forest. He then entered into forest along with Lakshmana and yourself
  4. Making friendship with the King Guha on the banks of Ganga
  5. Bharatha meets Lord Rama at chitrakoota and falls at his feet
  6. Destroying the eye of a crow (Jayantha, the son of Indra who came in disguise) out of anger by Lord Rama. (Jayantha troubled Mother Seetha. Lord may take the insult even if we abuse him but definitely not to his devotees. Once Jayantha realized his mistake, he was given the pardon and only one eye was removed)
  7. In the forest, Mother Seetha wanted to get a hold of the golden deer. Out went, Rama to grab it, leaving you with Lakshmana
  8. Taking the friendship of King Sugreeva, Lord Rama had asked us to locate you

After hearing all this, Mother gleefully accepted the ring (sent by Lord).

What is more interesting is, the way master communicator (Hanuman Maharaj) addressed Divine Mother in those verses

  1. Lady with thick dense black hair
  2. Lady with/of full blossomed garland , one with lotus eyes
  3. Lady with breast-jacket (blouse)
  4. Oh Vaidehi, who has sweetened milk speech and deer-like looks
  5. (doe) A lady having a lighting-thin-waist
  6. dark-flower-coiffured Vaidehi
