Through their relentless work, D.T.Suzuki, Thomas Watts and others had introduced Buddhism to the west and particularly to America, both philosophically & intellectually (The initial import came through the Chinese in the 1st half of the 19th century). Such collective consciousness about Buddhism helped to increase the awareness about the struggles of Tibet and helped them in its way.
On those lines, Bernardo Bertolucci had made an important contribution to enhancing the understanding of Buddhism through Visual media.
In this stunning biopic on Lord Buddha, through a non-linear narration, the life of Buddha and key concepts in his life were well highlighted. Without troubling viewers with the complex Buddhist philosophy and through graphical narration, it was a well-made attempt. The life & teachings of Buddha was placed amidst the existential crisis of Materialistic America
Keanu Reeves played a stellar part. With his Asian looks & chiseled body, he convinces us, totally. The symbolic battle scenes, where Mara gets conquered by Buddha is an absolute delight to the discerning viewer.
